Webinar: Disney's MagicBand and the Internet of Things

Wednesday, December 10, 2014 - 12:00 to 13:00

Ric Merrifield, Author and Innovator  (audio)

Ric MerrifieldJoin this webinar to understand why the Internet of Things is moving rapidly and how you should be thinking about the changes it can bring to you and your organization through Disney's MagicBand story.

The term the Internet of Things has been around for a long time but, until fairly recently, it was more of an abstract idea than something that will transform the way we experience work and life. Until about 18 months ago, the folks at Disney know a lot about who was in their theme parks - including whether or not they were happy. Today, because of a bracelet called the MagicBand that's offered as part of the Disney World 'experience', they know just about everything each 'guest' is doing - in real time - and that has enabled them to help their guests have more magical experiences with everything from attractions to dining. They spent almost a billion dollars to get there and, if looking at the performance of their stock in the last year is any indication, the project has been a big success.

Ric Merrifield, an expert in innovation through technology, will lead this webinar. Innovation has been a common thread in Ric's experiences over the last 25 years at Accenture, Microsoft, and at a boutique consulting firm. Ric's work at Microsoft on capability-based business architecture led to the 2008 Harvard Business Review article "The Next Revolution in Productivity" and also to the 2009 FT Press book: Rethink: A Business Manifesto for Cutting Costs and Boosting Innovation. Most recently, Ric has been involved with Internet of Things projects at Disney, Starbucks, and others.
